FAQ

The things people actually ask us.

Gluten-free questions, delivery questions, the MSG thing, how catering works. It’s all here.

Dietary + Ingredients

Is Grillbird actually gluten-free?

Most of the menu is. We built the kitchen to run GF-first: our teriyaki sauce is made with GF tamari, our fryers are dedicated GF fryers, and prep areas are separate. A few things do contain gluten, like the chicken katsu, the sandwiches, the mac salad, and the sesame noodles. The full breakdown lives on our allergy list, and at checkout you can select your dietary preference so we prep your order accordingly. If you have a severe allergy, call us before you order. We’d rather answer a question than send you a meal you can’t eat.

Do you use MSG?

Yes, in a few dishes. MSG is a flavor compound derived from fermented sugar cane or molasses. It’s the source of umami, and it’s FDA-classified as generally recognized as safe. The myth that it causes headaches has been studied extensively and consistently debunked. We use it where it makes sense because it lets us cut overall sodium while keeping the flavor loud. Every dish that uses it is on our allergy list.

Are there vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes, plenty. The Sesame Tofu and Cauliflower is vegan and gluten-free, and so are the Greens (baby bok choy, GF dark soy glaze, sesame). Beyond that we’ve got sesame noodles, cucumber salad, shaved cabbage, and rotating specials. Ask at the counter and we’ll help you build a plate.

What is your teriyaki sauce made of?

GF tamari, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, and a handful of other house ingredients we’d rather not give away. We make it from scratch at both locations.

Does the marinade contain soy?

Yes. Our marinade and teriyaki sauce are tamari-based, which is a soy-based product. That said, we do have soy-free options, more than people expect, and they’re all mapped out on our allergy list.

Do you use peanuts or tree nuts?

We don’t use peanuts or tree nuts as ingredients. We do use sesame seeds, which are an allergen, and you can flag sesame as an allergy modifier on almost any item when you order.

Do you have nutrition facts?

Not full nutrition panels, no. We’re a small independent shop and we cook from scratch, so we don’t have lab-tested numbers for every plate. What we do have is a straight answer about what’s in your food. Ask us about ingredients or allergens and we’ll walk you through exactly what’s in there so you can order with confidence.

Is the chicken halal?

No. We used to carry halal chicken, but demand dropped off and we made the call to stop. We know that affects some of you, and we’re sorry to those it does. If that changes, we’ll let you know here.

Ordering + Delivery

Can I order by phone?

No. We don’t take phone orders. Online ordering is faster, more accurate, and keeps the walk-in line moving. Order at grillbird.com or through the app.

How does delivery work?

You order directly through our website or app, not through Uber Eats or DoorDash’s marketplace. An Uber or DoorDash driver picks up your order and delivers it. Because you’re ordering direct, you’re paying menu prices, not the marketplace markup. It’s the same drivers. Just cheaper for you.

Is it cheaper to order direct than through Uber Eats or DoorDash?

Yes. When you order through the Uber Eats or DoorDash marketplace, they add their commission and fees on top of the menu price. When you order through our site, you pay our actual prices. Same driver brings it to you either way.

Do you have an app?

Yes. The Grillbird app is available on iOS and Android. Faster ordering, saved payment methods, order history, and loyalty points all in one place.

Do you have a loyalty program?

Yes, through the app. You earn points on every purchase and can redeem them for discounts. Download the app to get started.

Can I order ahead for pickup?

Yes. Order online and select a pickup time at checkout. Walk-in orders are always welcome, and we’ll have your order ready when you arrive.

Do you take reservations?

No. We’re a walk-in counter. No reservations, no waitlist. You walk in, you order, you eat. That’s the model.

Why do the available pickup times change?

Our online ordering paces itself to the kitchen. When we’re slammed, the system spaces out pickup times so every order gets cooked right instead of rushed, and it leaves room for the walk-in line, who we always look after. Short version: the times move so your food doesn’t pay for it.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. Grab one in-store or online here. Good at both locations.

Catering

How does catering work?

Order online through Toast or EZ Cater. Give us at least 24 hours for large orders. We pack it hot and ready for pickup at either location, and we can arrange delivery for larger orders through Toast Catering or EZ Cater.

Do you cater for offices?

Yes. We work with offices regularly through EZ Cater, which handles invoicing and corporate accounts. You can also order direct through Toast for smaller group orders.

What is Salad Party?

Salad Party is our sister brand. Chef-driven seasonal salads, made for takeout, and available for catering too. Big composed salads that change with what’s good that time of year. You’ll find them at our Phinney Ridge shop, and for groups through EZ Cater and Lunch Box. More at saladparty.com.

Locations + Hours

Where are you located?

Two locations: West Seattle at 6501 35th Ave SW (Morgan Junction), and Phinney Ridge at 6820 Greenwood Ave N. Both are street-level, easy to find.

What are your hours?

West Seattle is open every day, 11am to 9pm. Phinney Ridge is open Monday through Friday 11am to 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 9pm. Hours may vary on major holidays, so check our Instagram or call ahead.

Is there parking?

West Seattle has its own parking lot. Phinney Ridge has street parking on Greenwood Ave N and the side streets around it. Both are usually easy.

Company + Community

Do you franchise?

Not right now. We’re focused on running our two shops in West Seattle and Phinney Ridge the way we want them run, and getting that right before we put the name on anything else. If that changes down the road, we’ll say so.

Are you going to open more locations?

We already opened our second. Grillbird started in West Seattle, and thanks to a lot of support from you, we added Phinney Ridge. We’d love to keep going and bring it to more neighborhoods, and we’ll do it one location at a time so the food and the feel don’t slip. When there’s news, you’ll hear it here first.

Is your packaging compostable?

Mostly, yes. Our containers and packaging are compostable or recyclable wherever we can source them that way. Supply chains being what they are, we can’t promise it on every item every week, but that’s the default we build around.

Can you donate to my event or fundraiser?

We help where we can. Start a request here and tell us about it.

Our commitment

We make it right.

If we get your order wrong (wrong protein, wrong sauce, missing item), we fix it. We don’t hide behind “sorry for the inconvenience.” That’s not a policy. It’s just what you do when you care about the food you’re sending out.

Call either location directly and we’ll sort it out. If it was a delivery order and the food arrived wrong, the same applies. Reach out and we’ll make it right.
